My oppinion:
Since about everyone seems to agree this
one is total crap, I've been postponing seeing it for a long
time, until last night. Needless to say, I didn't expect anything
at all. After having seen it, I must say I disagree a little
bit with all the negative reviews. Of course, this is no masterpiece,
far from it, but there are way worse horror movies out there
in my opinion. There are lots of things I didn't like about
it, and on the top of that list is the really annoying clip's
they put in from the video game it's based on. If you're actually
starting to "get into" the movie (which rarely happens..)
you're sure to be thrown back into "real life" every time
the game images pop's up. Many people say the acting is terrible
in this one, and I agree in one particular case, the "police
woman" really didn't know how to act. The other actors did
a decent enough job in my eyes. The background story was pretty
nice too I think. Considering this is a B-movie, I think the
SFX were pretty nice too. Here my list of nice things to say
about "House of the Dead" stops though.. The dialogue is mostly
just dumb and some of the things these people do makes no
sense at all (like the way they acted when they arrived at
the island. And the entire part where the policewoman insisted
on taking one of the kids with her on a search in the woods.
The way that played out made it look like she really wanted
him to die...). Another problem is that the makers totally
fail to make us care for any of the characters. I couldn't
care less if any of them survived or not. The uses of Matrix
effects were also very overdone.
In conclusion, this is a bad movie, but not as bad as most
people seem to think in my opinion. Despite it's (many) shortcomings,
I did feel kind of entertained in the end.
My rating:
