Vincent
Price
Birthname: Vincent Leonard Price Jr.
Born 27 May, 1911
St. Louis, Missouri
USA
Time of Death: 25 October 1993 |
Vincent Price had his on-screen debut in 1938 with
the comedy "Service de Luxe"
after having done some theatre work for a few years. Price has starred
in many different kinds of films, but is most known for his horror
movies. Early on he starred in horror movies like "Tower
of London" (1939) (also starring Basil Rathbone and
Boris Karloff), and "The Invisible Man
Returns" (1940), but it wasn't until about 15 years
later that he really got a "horror star" status with the
movie "House
of Wax" (1953). In the late 50's he did lots of horror,
like "The Fly"
(1958), "House
on Haunted Hill" (1959), "Tingler,
The" (1959), "Return
of the Fly" (1959) and "The
Bat" (1959). In the 60's, he's most known for his Poe adaptations
directed by Roger Corman, like "House
of Usher" (1960), "Pit
and the Pendulum" (1961), "Tales
of Terror " (1962) and "Masque
of the Red Death" (1964). In the 70's he continued doing
several Poe adaptations, in addition to horror classic "The
Abominable Dr. Phibes" (1971). During his career, he
often starred alongside other horror stars, like Peter Lorre, Boris
Karloff, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Because his voice was
nearly as famous as his face, he did several narrator roles and
voices, even for Disney in the 80's and early 90's. In 1990 he got
a role in Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands".
Vincent Price died three years later in Los Angeles of lung cancer.
My oppinion
Vincent Price is one of my favourite horror actors. Any movie, no
matter how bad, is always watchable as long as Vincent stars in
it. There's no doubt that he had a real talent for acting. His voice,
facial expressions, and general looks and figure, all fits perfectly
for a horror character. Especially his performance in "The
Last Man on Earth" was great in my opinion, as he's
on-screen almost the entire time of the movie, but it never becomes
dull. Also the movies he's done with Roger Corman are very enjoyable.
Vincent Price never got the attention he deserved as an actor, because
he mostly starred within the horror genre, which has never really
had a good "reputation", which is a shame, but for fans
of the genre, he'll always be remembered as one of the greatest
of all time!
R.I.P. Vincent Price!
